Inwaarts (Inwards)

Site-Specific work for the group exhibition I Try To Imagine How Your Texture Felt Like Ypres
Inwaarts (2023), aims to draw our attention to the territoriality that defines the visible and invisible boundaries of a space. This site-specific work puts the historical and current conditions of the Kruitmagazijn Ypres (Ypres Powder Magazine) under tension. Inspired by the brick vault that both supports the architecture and seems to cover the void within, a new line is bing introduced, an arch, a boundary, into the interior space. A delicate silver structure is wedged between one corner and a single wooden oak block. A corner is often seen in as a "lost space" in architecture, for me it is a place where matter settles and new movements emerge. By introducing wood, a piece of a hundred-year-old diseased oak, I allude both to the oak barrels in which gunpowder was stored and to the outside environment, which, due to the thick walls and roof structure covered with earth, completely escapes the viewer. In this dark space, the light reflections on the silvery textile surface of the work "Inwaarts" create a constant twilight zone between presence and absence. Just like the groups of people, materials, and territories that ebb and flow and then disappear throughout the history of the city of Ypres.
This work is conceived for the exhibition I Try To Imagine How Your Texture Felt Like 2023 Ypres BE curated by Carina Diepens (NL) & Diana Franssen (NL)
